In ten days of July, the Prime Minister's Office changed three of its most senior political posts. Scott Gilmore — Carney's senior adviser on foreign, defence and security policy — became principal secretary on July 22 [Canadian Press]. The man he replaced, Tom Pitfield, went to the Senate in the Prime Minister's first batch of appointments. And Maia Johnson took a role that has never existed at the centre of Canadian government: chief operating officer of the PMO, while keeping the Canada–U.S. file [Globe and Mail].
