The Gulf's chokepoint risk just doubled, not just intensified

The US-Iran tanker war around Hormuz and the Houthi seizure of Mocha on the Bab al-Mandeb strait are two independent chokepoints now under active threat at once, each capable of moving freight and insurance costs on its own. Brent's move past $104 already reflects Hormuz; it does not yet price a confirmed disruption at Bab al-Mandeb, which carries a separate share of global container and energy trade. Any shipping, insurance or energy exposure through either route should be stress-tested against both closing simultaneously, not sequentially.

This is a stagflation setup, not an overheating-growth story

August producer prices hit a 2026 high of 5.4% annually, diesel just set an all-time record, Brent is above $104, and Fed hike odds have surged to roughly 70% — all in the same week, and all driven by an energy and tariff shock rather than demand strength. That combination is materially different from the rate-cut assumptions most 2026 budgets were built on a quarter ago, and it means a hike could land alongside slowing growth, not alongside a strong economy. Reprice hurdle rates, refinancing plans and hedge books for a hike-and-high-oil scenario now, a week before the FOMC decision and hours before today's CPI print.

Canada's trade dispute and its labour market are now deteriorating on the same timeline

Washington's new bans and tariffs land the same week Statistics Canada confirms 42,000 job losses and the slowest wage growth since 2017 in trade-exposed industries, while Carney's cabinet meets in Banff and Canada's own $27.6 billion counter-tariffs are already in force. This is no longer a dispute that shows up only in trade data — it is now visible in Canadian payrolls. Any Canadian exporter, or US importer of the newly banned categories, should plan for zero market access on the stated dates and for softer Canadian demand at the same time, not one risk in isolation.

AI capital is splitting into a monetization story and a regulatory-scrutiny story, in the same week

Oracle's $664 billion contracted backlog and Harvey's near-tripled $15.5 billion valuation are genuine evidence that AI infrastructure and vertical AI spending are converting into durable revenue, not just capex. At the same time, the DOJ is testing whether Nvidia's Groq deal was structured to dodge antitrust review, and Salesforce and Meta are both buying AI capability outright rather than building it. Growth capital can still flow toward AI infrastructure and proven vertical products, but deal structuring — licensing-plus-talent moves especially — is now under genuine regulatory watch, and should be modeled as such.

Both live ceasefires are hardening, not converging, toward resolution

Israel is still actively destroying major Hezbollah infrastructure three months into its Lebanon ceasefire, and Russia is still striking Ukrainian civilian and economic targets — killing at least seven in Pavlohrad alone — even as Zelensky pursues a possible late-September meeting with Trump. Neither track shows convergence toward an actual settlement; both show continued military activity beneath a nominal truce or ongoing talks. Treat “a ceasefire is holding” and “talks are ongoing” as descriptions of current activity, not forward-looking commitments, when sizing any exposure tied to either theatre.
