US-Canada trade talks collapse at the deadline and the 50% tariff takes effect
Negotiations broke down late Friday, minutes before the midnight deadline, and the 50% duty now applies to roughly 20 billion dollars of Canadian exports. The US Trade Representative said Canada declined to finalise the deal agreed earlier in the week and that new demands upset the balance reached in previous days. For any business with cross-border volume, the planning assumption changes today from contingent to actual: the duty is being collected, and the question is no longer whether to model it but how to fund it.
